Where exactly is 6.9 miles NE of Huntingburg? Too lazy to look it up myself. 😉
Good question and for good reason. Heck, where in tarnation is 2.7 miles southwest and 6.9 miles northeast of Huntingurg even measured from – the closest city limit lines, or the city hall downtown, or ??? Seems like a name and address plus either a county road and/or nearest intersection reference or approximate or rounded distance(s) would be both sufficient and more accurate for the layreader without having to look it up. Even still, where ARE these fancy distances measured from?
My best guess would be from the post office. My question is why not say 1 mile southeast of jasper, rather than 6.9 miles northeast of huntingburg?
Another good point. I thought the DCFreep might chime in with an answer on this location-measurement thing. A great example that makes so much more sense and is conceptually easier to reference, is the photo caption on the back page of tonight's (Thursday's) Herald…"the vicinity of county roads 500W and 700S southwest of Huntingburg." Forget this 2.7 and 6.9 stuff…and yes, why not southeast of the nearer community than northeast of the farther one?
We were simply using the exact quote from the National Weather Service's announcement. Mea culpa on the photo we provided that shows Albert Lee's house on 500 West.
Did the sirens go off?
Lee's garage is on 500 W. 500W is right before the 3 mile sign for Duff off of 64, so i guess thats the southwest touchdown
