Trooper goes extra mile to help young mother and newborn

An Indiana State Trooper from the Jasper Post went the extra mile for a young woman and her newborn after she hydroplaned off Interstate 64.

Wooten

Earlier this morning, Sergeant George Wooten responded to I-64 westbound near the 95-mile marker about 10 miles west of Corydon for a single vehicle minor injury accident.

The driver, Kaitlyn Wood, 19, Seymour, hydroplaned and drove off the roadway during an early morning rainstorm that resulted in a minor injury accident.

Wood had her newborn in the vehicle at the time of the accident. The pair were taken to the Harrison County Hospital by ambulance as a precaution but the young mother’s car was left at the scene.

Rather than having the vehicle towed, Wooten drove it to the hospital. He explained the vehicle was fine and she wasn’t from around here so arranging for transportation for her and the newborn would have been an issue.

He added that being a young parent is tough enough as it is and he wanted to save Wood a couple hundred dollars for a tow bill.

Ultimately, Wood and her newborn were treated and released earlier today from the Harrison County Hospital.

  1. We don’t always hear the good news so I was delighted to read Officer Wooten’s random act of kindness regarding going over and above making sure the mother and child were safe and even went back to get her car and drove it to the hospital. Let’s hear more about these officers when they go beyond what they are required to do, and praise them for taking care of those in need.
