Tornado Siren in Huntingburg not functioning
A tornado siren located in the City of Huntingburg is not functioning as of Tuesday, April 7, 2020.
The siren is next to the Huntingburg Utility Front Office, located at 508 N Van Buren Street. Federal Field Services has been notified and will be inspecting the siren at a later date. Residents are encouraged to be aware of the problem and to verify that their SAME weather radios have fresh batteries and are ready to notify you of any severe weather coming to the area.
As a reminder, sirens are put in place as a backup to notify residents when threatening weather is approaching. Sirens are not to replace your own notification process, such as NOAA weather radios.

These older sirens (when working;-) are so much better than the newer ones in terms of ease and ability of hearing the audible siren-sound. These old ones oscillate, or vary their sound cycles up and down, which is easier at various points to penetrate different hearing abilities, into buildings and cars, etc, to discern or catch or pick out the siren-sound from other noises. The new ones, for some reason, are either permanently set or programmed to operate at a continuous high pitch, and seems all-too-easy to blend in – not be detected – in many everyday scenarios both outdoors and indoors, although worse if indoors. Understand the new ones are more plentiful and cover more areas of town with their rotating sound, but still don’t think the continuous high-pitch sirens are as good as the oscillators at being detected – at least not for older hearing like mine. Glad we still have a few of them.
