Teenage girl involved in fatal ATV accident

Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a fatal ATV accident that occurred on private property near Paoli this evening.

Bailey Carty, 16, of Paoli, was pronounced dead by the Orange County Coroner’s Office after being found underneath an overturned ATV that she had been riding in the 2700 block of East County Road 100N.

Carty had been riding her grandmother’s ATV on a remote wooded section of a neighbor’s property for approximately an hour when she failed to return home. Shortly before 5:00 p.m., her grandmother found her unconscious underneath the overturned ATV.

Despite CPR efforts at the scene, Carty was unable to be resuscitated. Assisting agencies at the scene included the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, Paoli Fire Department, IU Health Ambulance Service, and the Orange County Coroner’s Office.

Carty was not wearing a helmet or any safety equipment. Indiana Conservation Officers strongly encourage riders to always wear a helmet and necessary safety equipment when operating an ATV.

An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow in Bedford. The incident remains under investigation by Indiana Conservation Officers.

First Responders from the Orange county Rural District 2 Fire and Rescue also responded to the scene.
