State police investigating police-involved shooting in Pike County
The Indiana State Police is investigating the death of a Pike County resident after a police-involved shooting.
According to state police, a Pike County Sheriff’s Deputy and a Petersburg Police officer responded to a residence on South Meridian Road in Oakland City Sunday at 2:07 p.m. after Pike County Dispatch received a call from Michael Faries, 69, of the residence. Faries told police he wanted them to come to the home because he and his wife were starving and someone was shooting at them.
When officers arrived several minutes later, they were greeted by Faries’ wife, who initially refused to let them enter the residence, said police. Officers instructed her they needed to check on Michael Faries’ wellbeing since he had contacted 911.
Police said that within seconds after officers entered the residence, a Pike County Sheriff’s Deputy discharged his firearm and struck Faries.
Officers administered CPR until EMS arrived, but Faries was pronounced dead at the scene by the Pike County Coroner’s Office. A handgun was recovered at the scene.
Detectives were not able to substantiate any information concerning someone shooting at the Faries prior to police arriving.
This is an on-going investigation and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
