St. Anthony man killed in motorcycle accident

A St. Anthony resident was killed in a head-on motorcycle accident Tuesday at about 3:02 p.m. CDT in northern Spencer County.

According to authorities, Joe E. Smitson, 47, of 500E, St. Anthony, was westbound on State Road 62 east of Troesch Junction when according to witnesses, he appeared to have a mechanical failure with the motorcycle. Smitson’s motorcycle then went left of center and struck an oncoming passenger car head-on.

Smitson, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene due to head injuries sustained in the accident. He was treated by members of the St. Meinrad Volunteer Fire Department as well as a doctor who drove up on the scene.

The Spencer County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident. They plan on having the motorcycle inspected by a mechanic to determine what could have went wrong.

The Dale Police Department, Santa Claus Police Department and Spencer County Emergency Medical Services also assisted.

  1. Jerry, it MAY or may not have saved him – but having a helmet even as a gift and actually wearing one are two different things. They are readily available, and I suspect at his age if he had wanted to wear one, he would have.
