Southridge to showcase theatrical upgrades with ‘Anastasia’

Southridge High School will present ‘Anastasia’ this week. Opening night is Thursday, February 27, at 7 p.m., and there will be three more opportunities to catch the show: Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and again on Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at the door or can be purchased at https://our.show/shsanastasia25.

The production will showcase the renovated auditorium at Southridge High School, which features an updated sound system, digital projection, and new lighting system.

The vast improvements and modern upgrades have allowed the high school to take on the dynamic story of Anastasia.

With set pieces depicting the opulent ballroom of the royal Romanov family to the gray, dirty streets of post-revolutionary Russia, the story of the lost Romanov princess comes to life on the stage.

‘Anastasia’ tells the story of Dowager Empress Maria Fyodorovna Romanov’s efforts to find her lost granddaughter. Meanwhile, two con artists attempt to pass off a street urchin named Anya as the royal princess to claim the reward while avoiding Gleb, the opportunistic Communist officer seeking to fulfill his father’s legacy from the revolution. Anya slowly realizes her royal heritage and returns to her grandmother to face a different future.

Here are a few images from Tuesday’s dress rehearsal. The program is at the bottom of the story.

Director Shane Denu steps on stage to walk the performers through a scene.
The cast dances as the revolution approaches.
Katelyn Wright performed a dance as the revolutionaries scatter the Romonav family.
Magdalena Fehlberg helps Katelyn Wright with her microphone before a scene begins.
Vlad (left), played by James Bowers, and Dimitry, played by Carson Blair, hatch a plan to claim the reward offered by the empress.
Marfa, played by Reagan Anderson, performs a song during the first act.
Eli Englert operates the digital projections on the large scrim providing the backdrops for the production.
Gleb, played by Jojo Soto, confronts Anastasia after following her to Paris.
The auditorium updates include a large scrim for projecting digital images into the backdrops, which allows the school to create images like this, accenting its productions for a significant cost savings over other methods.
