Sinkhole closes State Road 164 in Dubois County

Update: The road was repaired and reopened Monday afternoon.

The formation of a sinkhole about two miles east of Jasper on State Road 164 has forced the Indiana Department of Transportation to close that section of the road.

INDOT crews have closed S.R. 164 between 3rd Avenue in Jasper and the intersection of State Road 545. This closure follows a pipe failure Sunday afternoon at the 3.8-mile marker. Crews will be on-site Monday morning, May 4, to replace the structure and expect to be finished by later that afternoon depending upon weather conditions.

Until the pipe is replaced, the road will remain closed around the clock. Local traffic will have access up to the point of closure.

All other traffic should use the official detour following SR 545, SR 56, and U.S. 231. INDOT urges motorists to slow down and stay alert near crews. INDOT only lists the roads they have jurisdiction over as detours.

The Dubois County Sheriff’s Office announced a local detour that follows County Road 400E to Schnellville Road, Jasper-Dubois Road and Meridian Road.

  1. Closing the road at SR545 is questionable. You have shut Celestine down unnecessarily. Should have closed at S 400 E .
