Schuetter decides not to pursue special election

Democratic challenger Wayne Schuetter challenged Mayor Terry Seitz to take part in a special election Monday at the Jasper Train Depot. Schuetter and Seitz tied for the mayoral spot with 1,856 votes each during the November election. The recount commission threw a vote for Schuetter out last week handing the election to Seitz.

Mayoral candidate Wayne Schuetter has decided against appealing the recount committee’s decision to award Jasper’s Mayor Terry Seitz the election based on an administrative error.

Schuetter explained in a phone call today that he had spoken with numerous attorneys about the possibility of appealing the decision. “Most everyone I have spoken to has said that it will be very difficult to get the judge to approve a special election over a single vote,” he said.

He added that he needed to consider how much time and resources he was willing to invest in the process.

Schuetter does plan on hosting a press conference at the Jasper Train Depot next Tuesday at 9 a.m.

Schuetter had until Thursday to file an appeal of the recount commission’s decision.
