Primary over; new faces in 2014 election

The 2014 Primary Election is over.

Voting turnout was considered lackluster in Dubois County, but two incumbents will not return to the ticket in the fall in Dubois County.

Nancy Wilson beat out incumbent Barb Matheis for Dubois County Council District 3 with 388 votes to Matheis’ 250 votes. Matheis was appointed to the seat to replace Scott Knies after he passed away in 2011.

Wilson will face Republican candidate Charmian Klem in November for the District 3 seat that covers Columbia, Ferdinand, Hall, Jackson, Jefferson and Marion townships.

Also in Dubois County, Democrats Clarence Reckelhoff and incumbent Bradley Terwiske faced off for Marion Township trustee. Reckelhoff defeated Terwiske with 85 votes, 78 percent, to Terwiske’s 24 votes. At this time, no Republican candidate has filed for the township trustee position.

The only national race with Dubois County connections was the U.S. House of Representative race for Indiana Congressional District 8, which featured incumbent Larry Bucshon against Tea Party favorite Andrew McNeil. Bucshon won with  30,944 votes, 75 percent, over McNeil’s 10,395. The race was called for Bucshon with only 18 percent of the votes tabulated in the District.

Races for state offices looked like this for the Republicans:

For Senate District 48, Mark Messmer was the winner over Ted Metzger from Boonville. Messmer had 7,643, 80 percent, over Metzger’s 1,904 votes.

For Indiana House of Representatives District 63, Jasper residents Mike Braun and Richard Moss were pitted against one another with Braun coming out on top with 4,610, 67 percent, compared to Moss’ 2,292 votes. Braun is currently unopposed for the November election.

For Senate District 47, Erin Houchin of Salem ran against Tad Whitis of Laconia.  Houchin came away with the win with 5,630 votes, 57 percent, over 4,166 fro Whitis.

  1. In County Council District #2, Republican Adrian Engelberth (me) will face Democrat Becky Beckman. This includes Bainbridge 2E, 2W, 3E, 4N, 4S, 5S, and 6S precincts. The other Bainbridge precincts are in District 1 and 4.

    1. Congratulations! I saw your name on the ballot and voted for you. You may certainly place one of your signs on my front yard on a prominent street. We need to get you in office. This voting for “Uncle Bob” and “Aunt Patty” is killing Jasper. 50 years ago there were twice as many tractor trailers on our streets as now. Jasper is slowly exporting its industrial base (to where? China? Mexico?). This is what happens when people keep voting for their relatives and former school chums instead of intelligently looking to see who is most capable of the job. It’s time that people like you — who moved to Jasper for what it offers — start having a say. I’m with you 100%. We need to show the people of Jasper that real German-Americans come from places other than Pfaffenweiler.
