Perry County – A Boonville man was struck and killed while he was changing his tire on the side of I-64 about 10 miles east of Ferdinand Wednesday evening.

At about 8:51 p.m., Kenneth G. Derr, 64, and his brother Michael W. Derr, 69, both of Boonville, pulled onto the north shoulder of the west bound lane of I-64 at mile marker 73.5 to change a flat tire on a trailer. Kenneth was changing the tire on the driver’s side of the trailer when a passing vehicle crossed the fog line and struck him. The vehicle continued west on I-64 without stopping.

The vehicle was described as possibly being a dark blue older model small pickup truck or passenger car.

Kenneth was pronounced dead at the scene by the Perry County Coroner’s Office.  An autopsy is scheduled for noon today in Tell City.  Michael was not injured.

The Derr’s vehicle, a black 1996 Jeep Cherokee and the trailer they were pulling were not damaged.

The suspect vehicle has not been located and should have damage to the front right (passenger’s) side.

Anyone with information on this crash is asked to call the Jasper Post at 812-482-1441 or 800-742-7475.

The Indiana State Police were assisted by the Perry County Sheriff’s Office, Perry County Fire and Rescue, Perry County EMA, Perry County Coroner’s Office, and the Tell City Police Department.

  1. This is shameful! Chances are, no charges would be filed unless there was alcohol involved. Human decency requires you to stop when you strike someone with a car! I hope someone can help locate the driver!
