A Ferdinand man was arrested for murder and rape after a 3-hour hostage situation at a residence near St. Henry early Sunday morning.

Officers from the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department and Ferdinand Police Department were dispatched to the report of an intruder at a residence on County Road 50W in the Ferdinand Township area at about 2:40 a.m.

When police arrived, they found Jeffrey D. Perry, 37, of Ferdinand, dead of multiple stab wounds. A female victim was also there and was transported to Memorial Hospital.

According to police, Kyle Popplewell, 25, of Ferdinand, was holding one female victim hostage in the home. The county Emergency Response Team was activated for a hostage situation at the residence. Members of Huntingburg and Jasper Police Departments, Indiana State Police officers and negotiators all responded.

Officers made entry into the home at 5:40 a.m. and took Popplewell into custody. He was charged with murder, two counts of rape, criminal confinement, battery with serious bodily harm and burglary.

Both injured females were taken to Memorial Hospital for treatment and released.

Indiana State Police evidence technicians, St. Henry first responders and the Dubois County Coroner also responded.

According to police, the investigation is ongoing.

Deputy Stuart Wilson reported the snow and ice last night complicated the situation and made it difficult to get officers and first responders to the scene.
