First responders performed a water rescue Monday morning when a motorist disregarded high-water signs and his vehicle was swept off the road.

First responders were called northeast of Huntingburg at about 7 a.m. when Sean Clark, 22, of Lincoln City, was stranded standing on the roof of his 2013 Toyota Scion due to high-water from Hunley Creek along 400S. According to deputies, the car had been swept off the road and was in a ditch in about 5 feet of water.

Clark was rescued by first responders and declined medical treatment at the scene.

Clark will be cited for disregarding the sign marking the road closed. His vehicle could not be retrieved but will be when waters recede. It will be a total loss, police said.

Dubois County deputies, first responders from Huntingburg and Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services were on scene for about an hour.

Drivers are reminded to never attempt to drive through high water and be aware of signs marking closed roadways.
