Man involved in standoff pronounced dead after being found unresponsive in cell
The man arrested after a six-hour standoff in Jasper Thursday night was found unresponsive in his cell early Friday morning.
According to the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department, Armando N. Gutierrez, 33, of Evansville was booked into the Dubois County Security Center at 2:02 a.m. Friday after being released from Memorial Hospital.
At 5:53 a.m., a jail officer doing routine rounds found Gutierrez unresponsive in his cell. Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services responded and transported Gutierrez to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:08 a.m.
According to police, Gutierrez death is an open investigation being conducted by the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department. They are waiting on autopsy results from the Dubois County Coroner’s Office as well as toxicology results.
Gutierrez was shot several times with rubber bullets when SWAT officers apprehended him during the incident in which Gutierrez, brandishing a handgun, was barricaded in a crawlspace of the basement of the home at 401 Clay St.

good work jpd, you used restraint, but good judgement? very risky them rubber bullets.
Too risky in my opinion. The bad guys don’t use rubber bullet “restraint”. Could be that the post-restraint “restraint” was a little much (neck-choke hold?) considering he died afterwards – maybe from a little breathing problem? Regardless, if one chooses to live by the sword they had better be prepared if not expect to die by the sword.
