Man injured in crash during two-county pursuit
A man was severely injured after a pursuit ensued when police were called to the report of a suicidal man with a gun in the area of Baden Strasse in Jasper overnight.
Deputies from the Dubois County Sheriff’s Office responded to the report of the man with a gun to his head in the middle of the road at about 11:50 p.m. Thursday. They later located the man in the Walmart parking lot driving recklessly. He then heading north on U.S. 231 towards Haysville before turning east on State Road 56.
Police pursued the man into Orange County where he crashed the 1997 Chevrolet pickup he was driving, according to police.
An Indiana State Trooper deployed stop sticks in the path of the truck which the vehicle ran through but failed to stop. A second set of stop sticks was deployed and the truck ran through them as well before subsequently crashing a short distance later.
The truck turned over on its side during the crash and the man had to be extricated from the truck before being transported to Memorial Hospital by emergency medical services. He was then transferred to an St. Vincent’s In Evansville by helicopter for further medical evaluation, according to police.
Police located a bb gun in the truck during the investigation. The investigation is ongoing at this time.
State Road 56 near County Road 1175 West was closed during the investigation.
The sheriff’s office is withholding the man’s name at this time due to the injuries he sustained in the crash.
He is preliminarily charged with resisting law enforcement with a motor vehicle, reckless driving, and criminal mischief.
Jasper Police Department, Indiana State Police, Indiana Conservation Officers, Orange County Sheriff’s Department, French Lick Police Department, West Baden Police Department, Dubois Volunteer Fire Department, French Lick Fire Department, Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services and Magners Towing and Recovery of Paoli assisted the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department.
