Linus J. “Spitz” Knebel, 93, of Jasper, passed away at 1:08 a.m. on Sunday, February 12, 2017, at the home of his daughter.

Linus was born in Jasper, on August 3, 1923, to Frank and Helen (Betz) Knebel. He married Edna Kunkler on April 17, 1948 in St. Anthony Catholic Church.

He was a World War II Navy veteran who served in the Pacific Theater from 1942 to 1946. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #673. Linus was a long time employee of the City of Jasper, working for the power plant for 13 years and for the Parks Department for over 10 years. He also owned and operated Knebel’s Lawn Service. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper. He loved to garden, hunting, fishing, was a an avid fan of Jasper High School Sports and professional sports.

Surviving is his wife; Edna Knebel; five daughters, Ruth Knebel, Shirley Harter (Jeff), Bonnie Young (Greg), Mary Weyer (Don) and Pam Hughes (Ralph), all of Jasper; five sons, Edward Knebel (Anna), Terry Knebel (Lannette), Gerry Knebel (Corma), Fred Knebel (Lisa) all of Jasper, and Jeff Knebel (Teresa) of Haysville; 20 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two sisters, Tillie Jessup (Dale) of Indianapolis and Mary Ann Hunter (Frank), Tampa, Fla.

Preceding him in death were two sons, Donald and Charles Knebel, three sisters; Hilda Hauser, Elanora Volz, and Roselle Mac Farlane, five brothers; Clemens, Sylvester, Leo, Carl, and Edward Knebel, two sisters who died in infancy; Thresia and Mary Knebel, and one grandson; Kevin Knebel.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Linus J. Knebel will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper, with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper. The Jasper VFW Post #673 will conduct military gravesite rites.

A visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper, IN, and one hour before services at the church on Wednesday.
