Lewis Andrew Nigg, 98, Muncie

Lewis Andrew Nigg, 98, passed away Thursday, July 7, 2022, at Morrison Woods Nursing Home in Muncie.

He was born October 21, 1923, to Andrew Nigg and Alice (Gammon) Nigg in Shoals.

Lewis graduated from Dubois High School in the spring of 1941. The Pearl Harbor bombing in December 1941 made it clear that you either join the Navy or get drafted after your 18th birthday. So Lewis enlisted in the Navy in October 1942. He was deployed to Australia and then discharged as a Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class (T) in January 1946.

He went on to Indiana University in Bloomington on the G.I. Bill and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Arts and Sciences and in Economics. Upon graduation, Lewis joined Commercial Credit Finance in Muncie, as the District Manager, where he retired after 36 years.

He enjoyed playing golf, reading, and the stock market, and he loved playing with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren that lived in Muncie. His oldest granddaughter, Stacy, fondly remembers “playing pharmacy” and laughs today that is why she chose pharma sales as her career. Granddaughter Stephanie shared a lifetime of being Grandpa’s “Bunny” with many happy memories.

He is survived by three stepdaughters: Paulette Schwartzel of West Lafayette; Judith Hunt, Muncie, and Rebecca Gilinsky (Gerry), of Lowell, Michigan.; grandchildren, Stacy McConnell (Jeff), of Fishers, T.J. Schwartzel (Natalie), of West Lafayette, and Stephanie Farra, of Muncie; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Mary Jane Beckman Roth; his parents, Andrew and Alice Nigg; his brother, Kenneth; his sister, Barbara Jean Bennett; and son-in-law, Thomas Schwartzel.

Private burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper. Neptune Society is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Harvest Food Bank, 6621 North Old State Road 3, Muncie, Indiana 47303.

Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.neptunesociety.com/location/Muncie-cremation for the Nigg family.
