Letter: Reboot country’s spirit with a grassroots movement of civil and spiritual change

This is a crazy point in time, isn’t it? Across all states and our multitude of cultures, we seem to have lost the ability to find common ground. We have always had differences of opinions, and at times, the war of words would be very intense, but it never really became physical. This has begun to change. I think we can stop it if we want to.

How? Well, that requires individual effort to change yourself.

This is all about how you treat and envision fellow human beings. Our TV news, online news/opinions, and social media are making it so easy to hate each other. We make snap judgments and group people into different teams. We are treating life like sports. If you are not on my team, you are my enemy. This takes a light-hearted way of using free time and rooting for our home team in a game to a dangerous way to interact with each other.

The solution is to love your neighbor.

Now, I am quoting the Bible here, but this is almost common sense. Don’t you want to be treated with respect? Well, treat others with respect first. We have got to stop this team mentality and get back to having conversations with everyone, understanding where people are coming from to generate solutions to our problems.  We need to stop saying, “let’s have a conversation and now shut up because you are wrong.”

Think of our kids, who are so stressed out and have so much pressure on them. The suicide rate is skyrocketing and some are even making the decision to murder their fellow classmates and teachers. We have got to fix what really matters, quickly!

Each one of us needs to look in the mirror and make changes. Be a model for our children and show them how to treat each other. Start a real grassroots movement of civil and spiritual change to reboot our country’s spirit. If you do that, politics and other secondary things will slowly be addressed. It won’t make life perfect, but maybe, just maybe, once we treat each other as a fellow human, we can have a strong bond of respect for each other, in the only race we got…the human race.

  1. I agree with you and very nicely said Adrian. There is a lot of truth in your comments.

  2. Adrian,
I’m not sure where you quoted the bible. But I found this bible quote to be close to what you were saying:
    (Ephesians 4:32 )
“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”

Then again, the bible also says this.
    (Genesis)
“Then God said, “Take your son to the land of Moriah and kill your son there as a sacrifice for me. This must be Isaac, your only son, the one you love. Use him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains there. I will tell you which mountain.”

Pretty violent in that 2nd quote, therefore I would not use the bible as a tool to solve violence.

  3. I’m no Bible expert but I remember being taught that the Old Testament (before Jesus was here on earth) is quite violent, and the New Testament (after Jesus came here and died for our sins) is full of Love, Hope, Kindness, etc.. I’m pretty sure Adrian was quoting the New Testament.

    1. Silent majority,
The Book of Revelation is in the New Testament and is full of imagery of war, genocide, and destruction. It describes the Apocalypse, the last judgment of all the nations and people by God, which includes plagues, war, and economic collapse.

So there goes the theory of the New Testament being all about love, hope and good will to mankind.

  4. Bible or not..ugly is ugly..evil is evil..the devil uses anything to promote hatred and divide the good and live we all share and is given to us!!

  5. We are here to love and care for each other…not destroy each other!…God so loved us all..that he gave his son to us!! Then died because of all the unloving and sinful ways…. especially today when so many say, it is okay…but it is not!!! Love is one of the first and most important parts of life…

  6. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness based in Gods love. I agree with Concerned person, love is one of the first and most important parts of life. Love ye one another, sayeth the Lord!

  7. Well, Jeff, yes we ARE in Indiana. It’s a free country (thanks to our veterans!). If you don’t like Indiana…….MOVE away, but there’s no need for condescending remarks or insults.

  8. Jeff, some good points you researched out. Their will always be some that want to say “America, Love it or leave it” This I what the counter protesters yelled at Kent State a day before the four students were shot and killed.
