Katherine Guy-Pendleton, 94, Loogootee

Katherine Guy-Pendleton, 94, of Loogootee, passed away at 8:21 a.m. Sunday, February 12, 2017 at her daughter’s home in Bloomington.
She was born June 10, 1922 in Logan County, Arkansas to the late Simon and Gertrude (Leding) Edelhuber.
Katherine was one of 11 children growing up during the Great Depression. In her junior year of high school her father was killed in a coal mine accident. She stayed home and helped her mother for one year and returned to finish high school at St. Scholastica in Ft. Smith, Arkansas.
During World War II, Katherine, worked as a chemist at a Navy facility in Oakland. In 1942 she met Charles L. Guy, at a USO in Little Rock, Arkansas. They continued to correspond with each other when he was sent to Europe during World War II. When Charles was sent home after the war he went straight to Arkansas and proposed and married Katherine. They were married on November 5, 1945 in Paris, Arkansas and they were married for 53 years.
Shortly after being married they moved to Indiana as Charles started a job as bindery supervisor at the Abbey Press in St. Meinard, Indiana. Charles and Katherine moved to Crane and Charles worked there as a fireman for 27 years, until his retirement. Eventually they settled down in Loogootee where they raised 9 boys and 5 girls.
Katherine loved to garden and grow her own vegetables. She raised chickens to have eggs for the family. Once she was asked why she didn’t have a cow for milk, but she said because they were still inside the city limits they weren’t allowed to have four-legged livestock.
Katherine’s memory always amazed her family. She could remember things all the way to her childhood. She will always be remembered for making everyone she knew feel like a member of her own family. She concerned herself with people and always inquired about their families and children.
She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and the Martin County Right to Life.
Katherine was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Guy; daughter, Michelle Merrill; 1st husband, Charles L. Guy, who passed October 15, 1998 and her second husband, Lewis Pendleton, who passed June 26, 2014; parents, Simon and Gertrude (Leding) Edelhuber; and 10 brothers and sisters.
