Joint statement from Dubois County school superintendents on upcoming school year
Thursday, the four Dubois County school corporation superintendents released a joint statement regarding the upcoming school year.
All Dubois County School districts are working collaboratively to form a taskforce to plan to safely and appropriately reopen school for the 2020-21 school year.
There is an immense amount of guidance and information that must be used to inform our future decisions, the groups stated. Most importantly, we await guidance from the governor’s office, Indiana Department of Education and state/local health departments.
Each county is unique and the solution to starting school in the will be just as unique.
We recognize our part in providing for a safe learning environment and serving as a vital partner in our local economy, they stated. More information will be forthcoming as we await clarification of the situation from various sources.
Dr. Tracy Lorey, Greater Jasper Consolidated School Corporation
Dr. Jamie Pund, Southeast Dubois County School Corporation.
Mr. Bill Hochgesang, Northeast Dubois County School Corporation
Mr. Tim Lagrange, Southwest Dubois County School Corporation

Alot will quit school. Kids are in fear of this too.
E- learning is not for everyone and may be considered a failure in many cases and for certain groups of students. Our future is suffering but we must use common sense on any re-opening and what that will look like. Schools are going to have to catch up, so will that mean extended days or Saturdays when it is safe to open. There are also a lot of kids that have the potential to be at risk and may have to return later than others. Plus you will have the psychological impact of this , even with kids. The CASH impact is more than likely be a tremendous hit for all school corporations for several years to come. I appreciate all the teachers and administrators who are trying to do the best job that they can with what they have! What will the fall hold and will we be prepared?
These kids need structure! Those at home with no parents there do whatever they want! They need to be in school! Remember when everyone got measles! They got over it! Just like other viruses! Kids that are behind are lost on e learning! They need to be taught not just given assignments! I saw it! If you do e learning many will take on school online so that they are taught! I talk to parents! Please go back to your regular schedule! Still can be clean! Just like daycares! They need to build up their immune systems!
“It has been estimated that 7–8 million children died each year due to measles virus infections in the pre?vaccine era. ”

You send these kids back to school before this virus is gone and they get it, Yeah, they may recover. And if they don’t!!!! And what about the fact that they go home at the end of the day. Who is at home? Older parents, grandparents and siblings. Who in their right mind would take a chance with their child’s life?!!!
You have Debby. Every time you sent your child to school before the COVID virus, they could have gotten the flu or pneumonia and died. In fact the death rate among flu and pneumonia is 17 times higher among those less than 15 than those who have died from COVID 19. Just read the CDC report on deaths from flu and pneumonia for children under 15.
Actually going to school is much safer than staying home. A child under 15 has a 10 times greater chance of dying from homicide in domestic abuse cases, then COVID 19. There are 12 certified deaths from COVID in the under 15 age category.
You are correct staying away from the elderly is paramount until we get a vaccine.
Don’t think keeping your child at home is safer than going to school. the number one cause of death for children between the age of 1-15 is unintentional injury.

What if they have low immune systems and can’t help that because of underlying I issues. It’s a circle. You have to recognize all kids.
All things need to go back to normal but as many things change day to day with this virus dont believe throwing children out there as LETS see how many get it . As people still believe it’s a freedom thing not to wear mask has nothing to do with this virus. My child has structure they dont need school for that! Totally disagree. Some at the age where it’s legal for them to quit at 17 will. But we will see as kids children are thrown out.
Structure begins at home and ends at home. Parents teaching guidance that follow through there lives. But yes we well see as counts go up because of FREEDOM not to wear a facemask spread this. See it everyday. People dont care. Haven’t heard of anyone person preteen child adult ELDERLY getting immune to this virus. But time will tell…….
I think school should start as usual. E-learning is not nearly as good as being in a classroom. If your child has immune problems, keep them home, home school them by all means. But nearly all kids WANT to go to school. They want life as it was and do not want to be locked up or hidden away “just in case they get the flu.” If your child is sick, has health problems they should not be around other kids. These viruses come and go and will continue to do so. Most will ecover with no problem. Guard your child if you want, it is your decision but don’t keep everyone from going back to school if they want to. They learn more in a classroom. Online learning is not easy. Most kids hate it and find it difficult. It is not the same as being in a classroom where someone can help you personally when you have questions or need help. That is not so easy for E-Learning. My brother died of the measles at age 9. Both my sister and I had measles at that same time. Life happens but fear should not control your life.
Being in a classroom setting is the best learning environment for most kids but these are very unusual times. Opening classrooms before a vaccine could be devastating. How do you keep everyone safe? How can you stay 6 feet apart all day long in a school building, on a school bus? Many people could be infected from just one child. Parents, grandparents, siblings, teachers, babysitters. Safety for everyone in our community should be our biggest concern at this time.
As so many people are busy with their lives, we often forget to research information on this COVID 19 virus. I will link the CDC page below that contains this info.
There have been 69,000 certified deaths from February 1 2020 through May 20 2020. The news always has a higher number because there are delays in getting death certificates to the CDC. There are 12 certified deaths from Covid 19 of children under the age of 15 reported by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). In that same time span there has been 95 certified deaths from influenza under the age of 15. There has been 120 certified deaths from pneumonia under the age of 15. The chance of a child under the age of 15 dying from COVID 19 is 17 times less likely than the flu and pneumonia combined. In fact there has been 6,885 certified deaths of children from all causes under 15 in the same time span. The percentage of COVID 19 deaths for children under 15 is .17%. that is less than 2 tenths of 1%.
Up until 65, pneumonia is the greater cause of death in every age group. We even have a vaccine for pneumonia of which 68% of the elderly get each year. Don’t get me wrong, this virus can kill but we have never shut down our economy over pneumonia or the flu since 1918.
We must protect the elderly and the most vulnerable and let the rest of the age groups get on with their lives. The “group think” we are under now, wants to treat everyone the same, so as not to “discriminate” against any age group. What this has caused is massive unemployment and a worry on every household. Over half of the counties in the United States have had no COVID deaths since February 1 2020. The greater number of COVID deaths in SW Indiana have been at nursing homes.

We have vaccines for influenza and pneumonia. We have vaccines for measles, diphtheria, pertussis, shingles, poliovirus and others. Small Pox has been eradicated from US due to vaccinations.
Issue here is the lack of vaccine at this point in time. Common sense precautions.
You can’t go by research with this virus day by day things change.they are learning day by day about this from what they hear from other countries.
