Jasper Police remind public to lock vehicles in wake of thefts

With a spat of recent thefts from vehicles, the Jasper Police Department issued a reminder for residents to ensure their vehicles are locked anytime they are left unattended.

According to the department, they have received at least 25 reports of vehicles that were entered and rummaged through. Numerous items have been stolen and in all of the reports, the vehicles were left unlocked allowing easy access for the perpetrators. Most of these incidents have occurred on the city’s northwest side during the nighttime hours.

The Dubois County Sherriff’s Department has also received the same type of reports.

Additionally, the police department is asking citizens to sign up for the “Keep Watch” Security Camera Registry Program. All information is kept private and the department does not have live access to registered cameras.

In the case of a crime, police will use the database of security cameras to determine if one could have captured footage to assist in an investigation. If deemed beneficial, the Jasper Police Department will seek approval from homeowners to view camera footage. This registry does not guarantee the department access to camera footage. You may opt-out at any time.

For more details, contact the department at 812-482-2255 or go to the City of Jasper website under the police department to sign up.
