Jasper Arts Center seeking alcohol license

The Jasper Common Council approved the Jasper Arts Commission’s request to obtain an alcohol license for the Jasper Arts Center.

Jasper Arts Commission Board President Mike Jones and Arts Center Director Kit Miracle appeared before the council to ask for approval to move ahead with obtaining an alcohol license for the arts center so that wine can be served during events.

The Council approved the request and it now moves on to the application process to obtain the license from the state.

“It’s a convenience for the patrons who come,” Jones stated. “They might want to have a glass of wine before the show or have one at intermission.”

The arts commission will now begin the process of acquiring the state alcohol license.

  1. This is a BAD idea, not unlike similar BAD ideas to sell alcohol at golf courses, alcohol on Sundays and alcohol at gas stations unless they qualify as a full-service convenience or food store, etc. plus other requirements (the latter for another time).
Please, MUST we cave to the almighty dollar on EVERYTHING, including alcohol in our Arts Center? All this is really about – money – has nothing to do with “convenience for the patrons” or “a glass of wine,” etc! Isn’t there plenty of time and opportunity before and after a two-hour show to partake in the spirits for those who choose to? Can’t people refrain from this for two hours, for the greater good of all? Many of the patrons are children of all ages – and this change will simply offer one more unneeded, unnecessary and unwise opportunity for people to become inebriated before driving away with impaired faculties regardless of any “legal” BA limits. We have enough of those scenarios – way too many, actually – in conjunction with irresponsibility, particularly here in Dubois Co. Yes, it’s a free country and we have free will on both sides of this argument, but when the fire is out of control we don’t need to throw more alcohol on it. I’m sure my opinion will be largely lambasted, but given the circumstances of the family nature of our Arts Center, et al, this is a BAD decision all things considered.
