Illegal dumping forces Huntingburg to set hours for flood debris disposal
Due to illegal dumping at the dumpsters located at City of Huntingburg’s Street Department, set hours have been established. The gates will be open today, May 9; Wednesday, May 10; Thursday, May 11; and Friday, May 12from 12:00-3:30 p.m.; and Saturday, May 13 from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Tree limb and recycling drop-off will only be available during these hours, as well.
The following items will NOT be accepted: items containing freon, such as refrigerators; dehumidifiers; air conditioners and freezers, televisions, food, and tires. This service is for debris related to the weekend rain event only.
If they have not already done so, residents will be asked to fill out a Dubois County Disaster Initial Intake/Assessment form when dropping off their items. The dumpsters are made available to Huntingburg residents by Catholic Charities and Velpen Disposal.

It’s about time, and why the city has tolerated it – essentially looked the other way plus paid for by the taxpayers – for so long is anyone’s guess. Set hours and limited access ought to be the norm year-round at times established during the M-F workdays only – and closed after hours, weekends and holidays. No more 24-7 access in taking advantage of the city when no one is around, with illegal and unauthorized items plus from non-residential, commercial and out-of-city sources.
