Huntingburg woman arrested after admitting theft

Huntingburg — Huntingburg Detective Sergeant Christian Gogel arrested Tara K. Payne, 46, of Chestnut Street, on charges of residential entry and burglary Friday morning.
The arrest stems from an investigation that began on February 24, 2015, when Nancy Griffin reported to police that some items were missing from her home on Pleasant View Drive.
Griffin had told police she came home the afternoon of February 24 and found a woman, identified as Payne, coming out her front door of her apartment. Payne told Griffin that she was looking for her and thought she was home. Griffin and Payne spoke for a short time and then Payne left.
Afterwards, Griffin noticed that some of her prescription medication was missing and she reported the incident to police.
Det./Sgt. Gogel met with Payne at the Huntingburg Police Station Friday at 9:30 a.m. to speak with her further about the incident. During the interview, Payne confessed to going into Griffin’s apartment without her permission and taking some of Griffin’s prescription medication.
She was charged with Level 5 felony burglary and Level 6 felony residential entry. She was booked into the Dubois County Security Center on a $1,000 cash bond.

It’s a shame that people that are legitimately taking pain meds have trouble getting them because of the senseless acts of the “dope fiends.” Everyone who had narcotic medications PLEASE – Keep them out of sight and keep them locked up – because unfortunately, the doc’s will NOT replace pain meds that are lost / stolen without the hassle of a police report – and even then they sometimes will NOT be refilled until your actual next prescription is due.
