Huntingburg police arrested a woman accused of using another woman’s identity to be employed at a Huntingburg business.

According to the Huntingburg Police Department, on Monday, Carmen Reyes, of Orange City, FL, contacted them about her daughter’s stolen identity. The daughter, Sue Helen Hernandez Reyes, had reported the stolen identity about five years ago but had problems recently when the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity informed her that her unemployment benefits were ending since she was employed at OFS in Huntingburg, IN.

Police contacted OFS Human Resources and determined a woman named Sue Hernandez was in fact employed there and she had the same social security number as the victim. The officer went to OFS and made contact with the woman later identified as Maria M. Velasquez, 27, Huntingburg.

Velasquez admitted she had purchased Reyes’ identity from a man in Huntingburg about five years ago for $900. She received a birth certificate and social security card which she used to find a job.

Velasquez was arrested for Identity Deception (Class D felony) and lodged in the Dubois County Security Center at 3:46 p.m.
