Huntingburg man killed in crash involving ATV
A Huntingburg resident was killed when the four-wheeler he was operating was struck by a car on State Road 64 Monday afternoon.
According to the Dubois County Sheriff’s Office, Frederick E. Hanebutt, 88, was crossing State Road 64 near County Road 750 West on a 2007 Yamaha four-wheeler at about 4:30 p.m. when he drove into the path of an eastbound 2017 Toyota Corolla driven by Joseph Burger, 57, of Huntingburg.
Burger was unable to stop before striking the four-wheeler and Hanebutt was ejected from the ATV. According to police, he received life-ending injuries.
When deputies arrived on scene, they found Hanebutt had succumbed to those injuries.
Burger was uninjured in the crash. All of the airbags in Burger’s car deployed as a result of the crash and the vehicle is considered a total loss.
Neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected to be involved. The incident is currently under investigation.
The Indiana State Police Reconstruction Unit is assisting the Dubois County Sheriff’s Office in reconstructing the scene.
The Indiana Conservation Office is also investigating the crash due to an ATV being involved.
The Sheriff’s Office expressed their deepest condolences to all families involved.

Oh my gosh…so traumatizing for the other driver, I’m sure. Fred was a wonderful man. He will be missed.
They need to pass a law to outlaw people driving these ATV/UTV on public roads especially on hi ways. My daughter was in an accident several years ago where two guys on one was driving on the shoulder of the hi way and turn into her path at the last minute making it unavoidable killing them both on the UTV.
