At a caucus held in Jasper, Andrea Hulsman was selected as the Democratic nominee for State Representative in District 63.

She will face incumbent Republican Mike Braun in the November election.

Hulsman, 34, said she is running to bring a new voice to our state government. “I have never ran for office but I do have years of diversified leadership experience in serving my community,” she said in a news release. “I feel my leadership experience blended with the drive I have to bring balance to the state level makes me a good choice to represent the 63rd District.”

Hulsman was born and raised in Dubois County. She graduated from Jasper High School and attended Vincennes University.

Until recently, she was the youth director at Trinity United Church of Christ in Jasper and now volunteers her time with the church in that role. She is a part-time educator with Greater Jasper Consolidated Schools.

Hulsman took part in the 2015-16 Indiana Emerging Leaders project. She has served as a Girl Scout leader, vice-president of  the Jasper Youth Soccer Board, coached youth soccer and softball as well as been a coach with Indiana South Futbol.

Through her involvement locally, Hulsman has organized and lead several successful local and global outreach projects.

Hulsman said she decided to run for the seat due to her view that the current governor and the majority of legislators seem more interested in playing political games than serving Hoosier families. “I think we deserve better,” she explained. “We need more everyday, common people, not politicians, running for office.”

“Our public schools are the heart of our communities. Good schools bring new jobs, people and growth to our towns. Fair funding for our schools and support for our teachers in the classrooms needs to be a priority,” Hulsman said. “Along with a firm infrastructure and bringing back Hoosier Hospitality. There are so many issues that need to be addressed in this state.”

Hulsman, 34, and her husband Jason have three children and live in Jasper.

“I look forward to getting out and talking with the voters to learn more about what issues are affecting the people in this district,” Hulsman said. “And ultimately getting the opportunity to serve as State Representative.”

  1. “I have never ran…”

Support for better school funding is admirable, but hopefully she is a part time educator somewhere other than the English Department.
