Hugh T. “Sonny” Mattingly, Jr., 76, Jasper

Hugh T. “Sonny” Mattingly, Jr., Jasper, passed away at 4:05 a.m. on Thursday, May 14, 2020, at home after a six-year battle with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia.

Hugh was born in Washington, Ind., on July 19, 1943, to Hugh and Eleanor (McLemore) Mattingly. He married Donna M. Eisenhut on July 16, 1966, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Haysville.

Hugh graduated from Jasper High School in 1961. He earned a degree in business administration from Vincennes University Jasper Center. He was one of the first two graduates from VUJC in 1972, and later went on to serve as an instructor of Labor Economics at the University. He served in the Indiana National Guard and is a graduate of the Indiana Military Academy. He took great pride in spending his entire 40-year working career with Kimball International, Electronics Division. 

He was active in his church, Trinity United Church of Christ, having volunteered on mission trips, as a religious education teacher, and served on many committees and as President and Treasurer of the Church Council.  He volunteered as a Junior Achievement advisor. He was an active volunteer at his children’s activities including serving as an Odyssey of the Mind coach and was ever-present on the sideline for his grandchildren at their sporting events.  

He enjoyed reading, fishing, and being with his family most of all. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Mattingly; one son, Ryan (Ali) Mattingly of Newburgh; four daughters, Kerrie (Paul) Weinzapfel of Newburgh, Andrea (Kevin) Denu of Dubois, Susan (Andrew) Stout of Huntingburg and Audra (Brandon) Jahn of Jasper; nine grandchildren, P. Alexander Weinzapfel of Indianapolis, Bailey Weinzapfel of Cincinnati, Ohio, Jaxon and Adison Denu of Dubois, Aidan Altmeyer of Huntingburg, Emery and Colin Mattingly of Newburgh, and Parker and Nolan Jahn of Jasper; three step-grandchildren, Emma and Annie Stout of Indianapolis and Garrett Stout of Jasper; one brother, Jerry (Sue) Mattingly of Round Lake Beach, Ill.; two stepsisters, Linda (Bevin) Myers of Bradenton, Fla. and Gina Huey of Lakeland, Fla.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Marvin and Vicky Eisenhut of Haysville; nieces and nephews.   

He is predeceased by his father and mother, sister Judy Mattingly, and step-mother Joyce Mattingly.

A private service will be held at Becher Kluesner Northside Chapel with entombment to follow in Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Lange-Fuhs Cancer Center or Trinity United Church of Christ.
