Health Dept issues Tuesday update; gives mental health suggestions

The Dubois County Health Department is reminding residents to seek help managing their mental health as well as their physical health during the current crisis.

Managing stress during an infectious outbreak is difficult, but you are not alone.  Just as it is important to take care of our physical health, it also continues to be important to remember to take care of ourselves mentally as well.  Taking care of yourself, your friends, and your family can help you cope with stress. Helping others cope with their stress will make your community stronger.  The Dubois County Health Department wants to remind residents that there are resources and help available.

The Dubois County Mental Health Committee Community Support Team wants to continue to share some tips to help manage your stress and anxiety in this time of uncertainty.

3 basic tips to assist you at this time are:

·      Control what you can

·      Limit your exposure to the media and get information from reputable sources – Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including social media. Only go to trusted sources like your state and local health department or CDC websites.

·      Practice Self-Care and Positive Coping

  1. Have a “mental health decision” for the health dept: Start leveling with the people of Dubois County more often and for more timely, truthful and transparent information – STOP being so coy or mysterious as if we somehow can’t/shouldn’t know or are unable to understand and handle the truth of things – as if somehow less than, etc, etc. This latest news from MHHCC about “some” of their healthcare workers testing positive is about the worst example so far, but another in a long string/history of such. What IS the sum of “some” – ? If just two or three, what’s the harm of releasing such a number – ? So, have to figure it’s more – maybe many (more) – and people need transparency and truth in times like this – not hiding behind laws (that don’t apply to/for all information), pride or other lame, vague numbers and excuse(s).
