Geneva Z Himsel, 101, of Jasper, passed away at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, October 3, 2017, at St Charles Health Campus in Jasper.

Geneva was born in Saunemin, Ill., on October 24, 1915, to Earl and Alta Susan (Yates) Brittain. She married Luther Himsel on August 29, 1936, in Holland.

He proceeded her in death on April 24, 1979. Geneva was a homemaker early on. Later, she went to work in retail at 3-D, Watsons and Peebles where she received commendations for her outstanding service to her customers. She loved her work. She also served several years as cvice chairperson of the Republican party. Geneva loved cooking, traveling and gardening. All who knew her know how much she enjoyed her beautiful flowers. But her most beloved pastime was spending time with her children, grandchildren and her many good friends. She was a member of St John’s Lutheran Church in Boone Township. She also enjoyed visiting Shiloh Church as a guest.

She is survived by a daughter, Judy (Charles) Kerkhove of Greenwood, Ind. and three sons, Ronald (Connie) Himsel of Jasper, Tom (Brenda) Himsel of Greenwood and Jerry (Bev) Himsel of Jasper. She was blessed with 16 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Kenneth Himsel; brother, Glen Brittain; and infant sister, Alberta Brittain.

Funeral services for Geneva Z. Himsel will be held on Wednesday, October 18 at 11:00 a.m. at St John’s Lutheran Church, Boone Township with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Pastor Catherine Burnett and Pastor Paul Alvey will officiate.

Visitations will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 17, 2017, at the Becher-Kluesner North Chapel in Jasper and again at 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., one hour before the funeral service, at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to St John’s Lutheran Church or a favorite charity.

  1. Geneva Himsel was a very Special Lady to me. Met her when she worked for me in the Ladies Dept at Watsons. Always had a smile on her face. One night when we were getting ready to close, I heard her laughing. I said Geneva what’s going on. Then 71 years of age, She was holding up a very Matronly Ladies Dress, She said I wonder if I will ever be old enough to wear this dress. I said NEVER GENEVA. Anyone who knew her knew she was definitely a Fashon Statement including Hair, Shoes, Jewelry, etc.
