Friday: 13 new Covid-19 cases
As numbers of cases continue to rise, the Dubois County Health Department is urging people to follow the guidelines put out by the CDC to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Friday, the health department reported 13 new positive cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Dubois County residents. This brings the total to 1,125 positive cases of COVID-19 in Dubois County residents. Of the 1,125 cases, 910 have reportedly recovered and 20 residents have died. The health department also reported 8,841 residents have been tested.
“We are seeing high community spread of COVID-19 in Dubois County,” the department said in a press release. “We understand that stage 5 has removed some restrictions on the number of people allowed at group gatherings and special events. However, it is still essential to physically distance yourself from others and wear masks while participating in these activities. This increase in viral spread impacts our schools, healthcare facilities and the entire community.”
The Dubois County Health Department directed residents to the CDC.gov or coronavirus.in.gov websites for answers to many questions that are being asked. They stated they are happy to answer any questions, however, they are currently having a high call volume and many of the answers residents are seeking can be found on those sites. You can leave a message and they will get back to you as soon as they can.

Can someone explain why, during another spike in cases and HIGH positivity rate for Dubois County, Kimball has suddenly decided that the office workers who have been working remotely all these months suddenly need to come back into the workplace? Masks aren’t required unless your moving around the office, so we’ll be spreading it all over the building in no time. I don’t understand the logic at all.
I am a proud Kimball employee (18 years), but am now I’m scared for my safety and the safety of many of my friends and coworkers.
Aren’t you concerned about the people that work in the plant that dont have a option to work at home? I’m concerned about everyone at this point. Forest park continues to send kids home but refuse to shut it down. Something really needs to be done. BETTER LEADERSHIP IS A GREAT START.
I think there’s reason to be concerned both on the job and at schools.
If the students are participating in sporting events….could that be an answer to one of your questions?
I still think our Governor needs to lead and not worry about being popular.
Why are you concerned? For folks under 30, the case mortality rate for COVID is less than that of the flu. As you hit 40 and older, the case mortality rate starts to rise above that of the flu. If you are 60 or older, its probably at the level you should take precautions to protect YOURSELF.
If you still want to take kids out of school after you understand the risk low risk to them, you can only conclude it was never safe for kids to go to school as there are a host of ways they can die in the process.
By your comment David my guess is your under 30 years old.
Don’t you think you have a small responsibility in taking precautions to protect others?
If young healthy individuals are fortunate enough to have flu like symptoms they are the ones who bring it home to family members 40, 50, and 60 years old. These are the family members with health problems who could die from COVID-19.
David I pray your family is never
affected by COVID-19. But if they are your responsibility will change.
I am over 40, but look at things more analytically than emotionally. If you look at the data, even at 60 the mortality risk is only maybe 3 times that of the flu, but goes up from there. The majority of the deaths are coming from nursing homes, and the mask wearing in stores, social distancing, and school cancelling really won’t stop that from happening
If you adjust for increased US population and the increased nursing home population, this pandemic is very similar to the hong kong flu of 1968. Ask people who lived through that, and most don’t even know it even happened. If you ignore the hype and look at the actual impact (not impact of our insane over reaction) to your life, would you even know there was a pandemic? I bet the vast majority would not.
I know a 13 year old girl who had it yes she suffered couldn’t breath it wasn’t just flu like symptoms. So you are really misinformed. I too hope you and your family dont get it. As a parent too watch your children suffer and theres nothing you can do to make it better is heartbreaking.
This is another example of how and why the virus is spreading. Social gatherings might be part of it, but I don’t believe it’s all of it.
The COVID-19 numbers are going up fast. I think Govenor Holcomb should reevaluate his back on track Indiana plan?
I went to Grounded earlier today, and was stunned to see an entire family (maybe 6 people) all without masks, enter the store and proceed to shop. I have an at-risk husband at home. Going out is stressful for me to begin with, but this was shocking to see—particularly at a time when our cases and positivity rates have gone up dramatically again. I left my cart and walked out of the store (so far, Grounded has not responded to my email expressing concern).
Too many individuals around here do NOT care if they infect someone else. It’s just “I’ll do what I want; to heck with everybody else.” I’m just at a complete loss to understand this incredibly selfish, stupid mentality.
David Lightman, maybe that’s the difference between me and most people. I choose to look at things from a different perspective.
Nobody seems to take responsibility for themselves when they look to numbers, percentages, and news channels for guidance. But when your guidance comes from God it changes everything.
But, all emotions aside, without all the “hype” and the panic we all saw in the grocery stores how can you not know there was a pandemic going on?
Do you work? Did you loose your job? Did you not receive a stimulus check and wonder why?
People are dying from COVID-19 and their lives matter! Where they sleep at night isn’t relevant.
I know a healthy young woman who works at Amber Manor in Petersburg, she’s one of the many employees who was diagnosed with COVID-19. Her symptoms are worse than the common flu.
Don’t be so confident in the data telling you that getting COVID-19 is like catching the flu.
Yes, about 25/42000 people in Dubois County have died in from COVID. Probably 3/4 of those people would have died if they contracted the flu, based on their overall health. All I am saying is think about that for a moment to gain some perspective that people have clearly lost.
it’s your perspective that is out of whack. even if your numbers are correct, that’s 6 people dead. so think about that instead of acting like trump. thanks.
In case anybody is interested (since neither of our local newspapers bother to report new cases over the weekend), Dubois County reported *59* new cases today:
https://www.coronavirus.in.gov/2393.htm
By my count, we have had 141 new cases in the past week.
Absolutely not true on the reporting. Every Monday or Tuesday (now that there’s no longer a Monday Herald) without fail, both the Herald and DCFP report the weekend numbers. One week recently the weekend totals were all reported as happening on a Monday or Tuesday without clarifying a daily breakdown, but all other times they are broken down by the day – Sat, Sun, etc. – and reported on Monday (DCFP) or Tuesday (Herald).
People need to stop trying to make a comparison between influenza and Covid-19 in terms of contagiousness and mortality rate. Politicians and those trying to somehow justify the gross incompetence by our leaders in handling the pandemic are quick to dismiss the numbers or compare it to flu. According to recent data from John Hopkins University, approximately 206,932 Americans died from COVID-19 between February to September 2020. Conversely, over a 5-year period (2015 to 2020), an estimated 178,165 Americans died from the flu. That’s a pretty stark contrast.
Further, “only 21 deaths” (so far) attributed to Covid-19 in Dubois County may seem small when viewed in terms of the overall population here, but I would point out that Covid is still very much spreading in our community and the death toll is yet to be fully realized. I also find it extremely callous to suggest that 21 deaths is an acceptable number of deaths, and that the victims would have “died anyway.” Survival of the fittest, I suppose. I wonder how the families of those 21 would feel about that statement. Just out of curiosity, though: When does the Covid mortality rate here become *unacceptable* to you? What’s the magic number? 50? 100? 1000? When it hits your own friends or family?
I just find this blatant disregard for others by the very same folks who would no doubt boast that they are “Pro-Life” to be pretty hypocritical and, frankly, sickening.
Very well said kevin!!!! ONE LIFE IS TO MANY
Open your eyes to facts and don’t make everything political. This has nothing to do with politics and its sad that you probably don’t even realize you are being manipulated by the powerful people behind a political party.
Death is a part of life, and there is always a risk. It is a fact that the majority of COVID deaths occur in nursing homes, and the mask I wear at ACE Hardware does not effect that situation no matter how much you want to politicize it. Taking kids out of school given the risks is generally extreme when you quantify the risks analytically.
It this mentality were extended to automobiles, the speed limits would be capped at 25mph in the countryside and 5 mph in the city. One death is too much so we have to take precautions to eliminate deaths!
I’m not engaging with you further, “David.” It’s clear that your mind is firmly closed and you have no interest in following science or data.
What I did want to add to my previous comments, however, is that unlike influenza, we don’t yet know what the long-term effects of Covid-19 are on the human body. Unlike flu, doctors are seeing concerning signs of long-term and possibly permanent damage to lungs, kidneys and the heart. Even in younger patients, hospitals are seeing blood clots, strokes, seizures and other neurological issues connected to this virus.
It is also uncertain at this point, whether the virus could cause long-term weakening of the immune system or other health challenges later in life (think measles or chickenpox).
My point, again, is that we need to stop comparing Covid-19 to the sniffles.
