Four vehicle crash closes U.S. 231

Early Monday morning, U.S. 231 was closed for a chain-reaction crash involving four vehicles in WITZ Bottoms.

According to the Dubois County Sheriff’s Office, they responded to the crash that occurred about 2,500 feet south of WITZ Road at about 5:40 a.m. Deputies determined that a 2012 Chevy Equinox driven by Candace J. Oser, 19, of Ferdinand, a 1994 Chevrolet GMT driven by Chris M. Ferguson, 52, of Huntingburg, and a 2006 Chrysler Newport driven by Brandon M. Masterson, 23, of Grandview, all slowed for traffic that was stopped on the highway. As they slowed, a 2012 Toyota Corolla driven by Destiny N. Goffinet, 24, of Dale, slammed into the back of Masterson’s Chrysler forcing it into the rear of Ferguson’s Chevrolet and subsequently, causing Ferguson to strike Oser’s Equinox.

During the chain-reaction crash, Masterson’s vehicle ended up traveling off the east side of the road coming to rest after striking a guardrail.

Deputies estimated that Goffinet’s and Masterson’s vehicles were totaled while there was no visible damage to Ferguson’s Chevrolet nor Oser’s Equinox.

There were no injuries. The roadway was blocked for about one hour while the scene was cleared.

A KARS wrecker service assisted at the scene.

  1. So many drivers follow SO close through that area, and especially if you reduce speed through the short 50mph zone at WITZ Rd outlet. It’s always nerve-wracking with tailgaters, knowing that they’re garunteed to plow into you if you have to brake suddenly for any reason….and knowing that they would easily smash you into what you’re trying to avoid hitting in front, and what’s even worse, knowing that the tailgating truck or tractor trailer behind you would easily roll over the top of you, if you had to brake or stop suddenly!
Remember, It takes longer to stop an average-weight car at even 40mph than most people realize! Then add to the mix all of the impaired drivers out there. People drive safe!…slow down, and give the person in front of you at least 3-4 car lengths worth of space, and even more, if they’re swerving)
