Dr. Norma Kreilein gives congressional briefing on biomass concerns

Dr. Norma Kreilein gave a presentation on the health impact of particulates released by biomass incinerators at a congressional briefing in Washington D.C. The briefing was attended by congressional aides and representatives of the biomass industry.

The goal of the briefing was to convey the serious cost in regards to the health effects and environmental impact of biomass incinerators. Kreilein has taken the reigns from Pastor Chris Breedlove in opposing the lease of the Jasper Power Plant to Jasper Clean Energy to be refitted as a biomass incinerator. Currently the appeal of Judge Lucy Goffinet’s decision in January is in the hands of the appellate court and it could be six months before a decision is rendered.

“Outside of Jasper the atmosphere is more welcoming in regards to our views about the dangers of biomass,” Kreilein stated. “There are sympathetic ears in congress and we gave them information to begin opposing the energy sector carte blanche saying this (biomass) is fine.”

Kreilein says this is important due to the subsidies that are propping up the industry. “The biomass industry would not exist without the federal subsidies,” she said.

According to Kreilein if subsidies are curtailed it becomes easier for citizens to oppose. “When the government is part and parcel of the support, we’re not only paying for the healthcare cost, we’re paying for the powerplant,” she said. “It’s critically important we don’t use our taxes making people sick.”

Dr. Kreilein was joined by Rachel Smolker, Ph.D., Dr. William Sammons, and Dr. William Blackley. Kreilein’s presentation dealt with inflammatory diseases related to air pollution created by the burning of biomass. The presentations are available here.

  1. If Jasper is so terrible, and the air quality is so poor, why does Dr Kreilein still live in Jasper?! She drives a suburban to Washington every day, and both of her sons drive diesel trucks. Seems incredibly hypocritical to me. If you don't like it, get out of town.

  2. Total Nonsense. Coal is great but Biomass is deadly, read all about it. How does someone go before congress and spew this? Coal is loaded with cancer causing, heavy metals and toxic chemicals but somehow the 'nanoparticulates' in Biomass are a 'major threat' to national health. I love all these health experts coming out of the woodwork to oppose Biomass. They are apparently just fine with coal, burn all the coal you want, emit all the sulfur dioxide, arsenic, etc., but for God's sake nobody burn a tree. That will kill people because its never been done before. Have you not caught a terrible cold after going on a camping trip, sitting too close to the fire? Maybe it was the last time you used your fireplace and you were poisoned by the nanoparticulates. Don't remember that? Well that is probably because you did not have a team of experts and lawyers there to verify your illness.

These people are a national treasure. We do not even need Comedians because we have people like this doctor. We can filter particulates and we can do it cost effectively to the point where her testimony is essentially a bold faced lie. The technology is inexpensive and the health risks are minimal. In the end, the health risk associated with biomass are far and away miniscule by any rational comparison to coal. God save us from the hysterical environmentalists who would rather kill us all than see a single tree be cut down or used for something to benefit another human being.

  3. Spot on Jesse, I wish more people thought like you instead of this word omitted Kreilein.
