The Dubois County Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) are celebrating Constitution Week this week with displays in libraries throughout the county.

The Constitution was signed 226 years ago on September 17, 1787. The tradition of  DAR celebrating the Constitution started in 1955 when the group petitioned Congress to set aside the week for the celebration. It was signed into public law on August 2, 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

“Constitution week is the perfect opportunity to read and study this great document which is the safeguard of our American liberties,” said Lynn Forney Young, National DAR president general. “We encourage all citizens across the country to take time this week to reflect on our heritage of freedom and come together to celebrate America.”

DAR is one of the most inclusive genealogical societies in the country, it boasts 175,000 members in 3,000 chapters across the United States and internationally. Any woman 18 years or older-regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background-who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution, is eligible for membership.

Linda Messmer is the DAR Regent for Dubois County.

  1. I have been a member of this fine organization since 1995. I have served as Regent and Vice-Regent for a combination of twelve years. If you think you might qualify for membership through an ancestor, please contact our current Regent Linda Messmer.

    1. Barbara,
My relatives are Blessingers from Dubois County. My mother, Evelyne Mercker Eickhoff, grew up in Dubois County, moving to Evansville, IN in the 1940s. Her father, Theodore Mercker’s parents were Francis William Mercker and Mary Blessinger. My mom remembers there being a link to the DAR through the Blessingers. I receive a DAR scholarship at the University of Evansville, back in the late 1970s, early 1980s and can’t find the paperwork turned in to get the scholarship. Would someone in your chapter have access to my DAR relative?

Appreciate any help you can provide…..
