County Council bucks commissioners vote to rescind 90 day pay policy for employees

Dubois County – The County Council confirmed the current 90 percent pay policy will stay in effect for the foreseeable future.

All new county employees receive 90 percent of their allotted pay for their first 90 days of employment. The council has a history of waiving the 90 day pay policy for employees in several instances at the request of their department heads.

In August the council fielded a request from Sheriff Donnie Lampert to waive the 90 percent for 90 day policy for an employee he felt deserved full pay due to his work qualifications. The council approved the request but also voted to make the 90 percent for 90 day policy arbitrary and solidified the fact it would never be waived again. (Story here)

Earlier this month, the County Commissioners rescinded the 90 percent for 90 day ordinance for new employees but the council’s vote was needed to confirm the ordinance removal.

Prior to the vote, the council agreed the ordinance was similar to a private company’s policy to provide a pay raise after an allotted probationary period was completed.

The vote means any new employee for the county will receive 90 percent of their pay for 90 days.

  1. Absolutely incredible. A classic example of cutting off the nose to spite the face – council vs commissioners, etc. The least the council could have done was to amend the policy and retro-pay new employees the ten percent they forfeited during their first 90 days, assuming a satisfactory evaluation enough to retain them. Moreover, there are a number of other long-proven and widely-used ways to progress from the “old-school” mindsets of yesteryear, such as a tiered or stair-step wage structure for ALL employees – and several creative variations of such.
