Community gathering planned to honor victims of gun violence
ONE Dubois County will host a community gathering honoring all victims and survivors of gun violence at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 8, at 1435 St. Charles Street, Jasper.
It has been 15 months since the devastating school shooting in Parkland, Florida. Since that day, 1,200 children have been killed by a firearm in the United States.
As part of the community gathering, the group will place 1,200 orange flags in recognition of the lives lost to gun violence.
Attendees are invited to wear orange as a symbol that they are committed “to fight for a future free from gun violence.”
Also, throughout the coming weeks, the group plans to honor and tell the story of twelve of these children who lost their lives, their future, their potential impact on our world to gun violence.
The stories will be shared at sinceparkland.org each day on the ONE Dubois County Facebook page.

And just think of how many lives could be saved if teachers were allowed to be armed, parents and family members were allowed their right to self defense in the gun free zones or states where the multitude of these shootings happen. of course also not mentioned is how many “children” had their lives taken by suicide and how many of these “children” are of ages up to what, 25 or whatever age they use in their studies as being children.
I agree that anyone being shot with firearms is a horrible thing. But all these ideas that if Americans would just give up their rights and let the govt step in as our caretakers, we would be so much better off is one of the most abhorrent ideals that our society faces. In no way would society be in any better shape. All one has to do is look to Europe and see the rise in knife crimes (they are actually starting to regulate butter knives) or acid attacks. In Japan just yesterday there was a knife attack on children at a bus stop. A father and his daughter were killed along with 8 or so other children wounded severely. What is the difference between guns and other weapons? Not so much it seems. And where does the nanny state end? Regulating butter knives? I doubt it. Next is screwdrivers and hammers, what’s next? rocks? So, how is that govt caretaker mentality working out for them?
The number of defensive uses of firearms vastly outnumber the criminal use of them. Up to 3,000,000 defensive gun uses per year per studies by the Center for Disease Control and FBI statistics.
I am sorry people get hurt. The fact is that the world is a dangerous place, always has been. Please don’t let gun control activist cloud your mind using an their emotional tactics. They are for one thing, control.
Amazing to me that these advocates for stricter laws seem to sidestep the fact that there are ample laws already in place. Why don’t they spend their time and energy addressing how to be productive in helping enforce existing laws.
Violence in its varied appearance to take lives is not caused by the weapon but the user. Perhaps people need to learn self-respect, respect for others, respect for life. who raises kids when both parents work, especially those working 2 or 4? In some it is grandparents, or other relation, but others it is friends. Is it depression? Is it self-worth? Is it anger? Is it BULLIES? It seems simple to lay the blame at home or school, but it is a community. Some want to blame entertainment violence or bias or any one but self. Laws for restrictions have led to other means so the answer is not there. bosses and teachers and parents do not hear the rejection from peers that kids and adults face. It is vital to teach not just words but actions that life is important, to have an alternative when words do not express the feelings.
