Clara P. Stemle, 99, Jasper

Clara P. Stemle, 99, of Jasper, passed away at 6:03 a.m. Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at St. Charles Health Campus in Jasper.

Clara was born on October 15, 1917, in Scott City, Mo. to William and Elizabeth (Seyer) Blattel. She had two marriages. She married Leroy J. Egler on December 26, 1940, in Kelso, Mo. He was killed on June 4, 1945, during combat in the Philippines during World War II. She then married John Stemle on July 2, 1959, in St. Joseph Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on April 19, 1998.

Clara retired as a head cook for the Greater Jasper School Corporation, where she was instrumental in starting the first school cafeteria in Jasper. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper, where she was a past member of the Daughters of Isabella. She enjoyed cooking, baking cookies, and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by one son, Gary Egler and wife Rita of Jasper; brother, Leon Blattel of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; three grandchildren, Debbie Mann, Jennifer Ulsomer and Tom Egler; four great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death besides both of her husbands were four sisters; Maria Gawthorp, Alvina Haase, Dorothy Miller and Virginia Mehringer; and two brothers; Theon Blattel and Paul Blattel,

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 27, 2017, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper, with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper at a later date.

A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. service time at the church on Monday.
