Bernard M. “Sonny” Kress, 78, of Jasper, passed away Wednesday evening, March 4, 2020, at Advent Health East in Orlando.

Sonny was born in Jasper, Indiana on October 4, 1941 to Bernard A. and Eva (Yaggi) Kress. He was united in marriage on June 25, 1966 to Norma Neukam in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.  

He served for four years in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served in the honor guard on board the ship U.S. Oklahoma City. Sonny retired as the owner and operator of Kress Carpet Cleaning Service, which he operated for more than 30 years, and previously was employed in the family dry cleaning business. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper. He served as a Boy Scout Master of Troop 182 in Jasper for over 20 years. He enjoyed hiking and being in the outdoors, his winters in Orlando, FL, and spending time with his grandchildren.   

He is survived by his wife, Norma Kress of Jasper; one son, Christopher Kress and his wife, Julie, of Orlando, Fla.; one daughter, Heather Kress and her husband, Jim Ouellette, of Malden, Mass.; two grandchildren, Gabriel and Emma Kress of Orlando.

Preceding him in death were his parents and one sister, Donna Bonifer, and a brother in law, Donald Bonifer.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Bernard M. “Sonny” Kress will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 12, 2020, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper with burial to follow in St. John’s Cemetery at the Dubois Crossroads. A visitation will be held from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, 2020, at the Becher-Kluesner North Chapel in Jasper.

  1. Bernie was truly a good and decent man. He led and taught boys to be men for over 20 years. He was my hero who greatly influenced my life and many other men. We loved him. Godspeed.
