5th grader killed in Evansville accident has local connections

A fifth grader struck and killed by a vehicle in Evansville last Thursday will be buried in the Zoar Cemetery in Stendal Wednesday.
Madeline Fisher, 11, Evansville, was a student at Dexter Elementary School. She was born in Jasper in 2003. Her mother, Sarah Weitkamp and brother, Jonah Weitkamp, both live in Evansville. Her father and stepmother, Jeremy and Carrie Fisher, live in Jasper. A grandparent, Jackie Mellenthin, lives in Ferdinand.
According to witnesses at the scene of the accident, Fisher was attempting to cross Vann Avenue — a four-lane undivided road — near Bayard Park Drive. One motorist reported narrowly missing the 11-year-old before she was struck by a Ford Edge crossover driven by Brooke Fisher (the two were not related). Fisher told police she didn’t see Madeline before the accident.
A collection site has been established to help with the funeral expenses.
