2nd death announced, 11 additional cases confirmed
The Dubois County Health Department reported the second death in the county attributed to the coronavirus.
“It is with great sadness that I am announcing the second COVID-19-related death in Dubois County,” said Dr. Ted Waflart, Dubois County Health Officer. “We at the Dubois County Health Department send our deepest condolences to the family and friends during this difficult time. This is a very serious virus that affects us all and we urge everyone to continue to practice social distancing and use all preventative measures to prevent the spread of this virus.”
The individual did have underlying medical conditions. No further information about the patient will be released due to privacy laws. We appreciate the community’s show of respect regarding the loss of one of our own citizens.
Additionally, they reported 11 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 bringing the total in Dubois County to 58.
Total Positive Cases New Positives Recovered* Deaths 58 11 26 2
Please remember the best way to protect yourself and the rest of our community is to wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, avoid touching your face, avoid close contact with people who are sick, stay home when you’re sick, cover your cough or sneeze and clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces. Don’t forget it is very important to wear a cloth face mask when out in public and continue to social distance even when you wear a cloth face mask.

The Health Department has released no information about patients due to privacy laws until now. I can’t help but wonder why they felt the need to release the information that both deaths related to COVID-19 had underlying medical conditions?
When patients are tested positive for COVID-19 are they required to self isolate for a certain amount of time? If a patient has *self-reported themselves feeling better and out of isolation if they’ve not been isolated long enough could they possibly still spread the virus?
To your first question, likely because this/these are the first death(s) and that’s a step-up from just an infection. Also because “underlying (medical/health) conditions” is THE key factor in/about deaths from this virus – without underlying conditions and/or older age, virtually no one dies from this (a very small percentage). As far as testing positive and assuming no hospitalization is required (only a tiny fraction of those infected are hospitalized), yes – isolate for 14 days or longer and until your symptoms go away and you’re feeling better, if not totally better (consult a/your doctor), and then another 7 days to be sure/safe, for the very reason/answer to your last question.
Mrs. Green the point to my question was how do we know the patient was in isolation as long as they were required to be? Just because a patient reports they feel better that doesn’t mean they do.
When your family needs you to go back to work to put food on the table, you learn to go to work sick.
This is no accusation against anyone this is from personal experience.
In my opinion when a patient has had the flu allowing them to decide when they feel better isn’t a problem. But in this case it can be deadly.
When is Mayor Vonderheide going to decide to close the city back down? Virus numbers have more than doubled in Dubois County since the strict lockdown was lifted. I realize that business owners are struggling, but people are dying! To me, life vs. money is an easy choice to make. My husband quit his job in order to stay healthy himself and to keep our kids out of daycare. It was a hard decision, but it was clearly the right one.
The ISDH states there are actually 59 cases in Dubois County according to their dashboard as of May 12th.
It also states there has only been a single death. The numbers locally have varied since the beginning and they are changing daily. Our status update is based on statistics that are known at 8 a.m.
Just curious but there have been reports that people are still being denied testing. That their symptoms are not bad enough. With all the different info out there, I could be wrong but I was under the impression that the symptoms aren’t always that bad. If people think they may have it but are refused testing and they go about their lives, won’t that spread it more. Most employers and unemployment want medical proof or documentation of some sort and people are being denied that. Seems like a twisted mess that only hurts the hard working people trying to wade through this mess. If people that think they may have it can’t get tested, why have the tests to begin with. Anyone should have the opportunity to be tested. Selective testing doesn’t stop the spread of the virus. I thought the tests were meant to quarantine people who were positive to stop the spread. So positive people with less symptoms are aloud to spread the virus but really sick people aren’t. Clear a mud. Thanks!
It’s been said and recommended from the beginning – it has not changed – that regardless of, or in the absence of testing, if anyone feels/gets ill in any way (even if not exact symptoms), they should consider that they might have the virus and immediately shelter in place, isolate, etc. Do NOT go out/about or to work, etc. If people actually did this we would have much less of a transmission/infection problem – to include less deaths of the most vulnerable – but folks are hung up on testing and all the politics about it, and are forgetting the basics. Isolate for a minimum of 14 days at the earliest illness symptom of any kind, let it run its course at home, and the vast majority of 95 percent or more will recover without even hospitalization. People want to talk about and criticize the lack of self-responsibility with masks and the sort, but the larger one is staring them in the face while criticizing others. We have become all-too-over-hyped with false fear from the media and other sources all knee-jerking from ulterior political/other nefarious motives plus a sheer lack of both common sense and an over-dependency on an end-all government to control our every move.
7 hypens. and 4 forward slashes. But only two ()’s, which is down from 10 from your earlier post.
I am a person who is high risk. I choose to stay at home so the economy can open. Yes the cases will go up. You can’t stop it even staying at home. The economy needs to reopen otherwise their will be nothing to go back to. If you stay closed to long our country will become a welfare state. I’m disabled and I will tell you if your able to work you don’t want to continue down the road where the government says they will take care of you. As you can already see the government doesn’t always know what is best for you. It doesn’t matter what political affiliation you are. All politicians are full of empty promises. Complete control of your life is their final objective. People don’t realize that there is another side to being out of work. Substance abuse, domestic violence, mental health problems and suicide. Most people let fear control their lives. I would rather see the economy open up and people take pride in their work to support themselves and their family.
Anyone can have a substance abuse problem, domestic violence can happen in any home, it knows no social boundaries. Anyone can have a mental health issues. Thinking someone would never commit suicide because of their social status is foolish. It leaves your friend or loved one without the support they need.
Regardless of your social status we all deal with the same issues.
