19 new Covid-19 cases in Dubois County
Thursday, the Dubois County Health Department reported 19 new positive cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19 in the county. Since last Friday, 71 new cases have been reported in the county.
According to Dubois County Health Department Director Shawn Werner, the numbers are not increasing because of any major outbreaks in schools or from specific events. He explained that the increases are coming from a myriad of instances.
“All of Southern Indiana is seeing this uptick now,” he said. “It’s still a lot of community spread. We are seeing a lot come from weddings, get-togethers, things like that.”
Increased travel is also causing issues.
“We see a lot of groups traveling and then returning positive,” Werner explained.
And, that’s a major problem, according to Werner. If five people come back positive from a trip, typically they each give it to everyone in their household. “It goes from five cases to 20 cases,” Werner said. “And you can get a very quick spike like this.”
He said that adds to the numbers we are seeing in the region right now.
He pointed out that as the numbers go down and people become more lax in the guidelines regarding masks, social distancing, hand-washing, and self-quarantining the infection rates begin to rise again.
“When you get a lot of cases, people are more aware of it and they take the precautions. They wear their masks, social distance more,” he said. “We were in a lull there for a little while so people were more lax.”
The health department continues to encourage community members to take every step possible to help prevent its spread. Wear a mask, wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Sneeze or cough into a tissue, or inside of your elbow. Disinfect frequently used items and surfaces as much as possible. Stay home if you are feeling ill. Please continue to practice physical distancing and stay at least 6 feet from others.
The statewide mask mandate is still in effect.
“It is cyclical,” Werner said. “Even though we are in Stage 5, it doesn’t mean everything has gone back to normal.”

So let’s stage back. And yes it is coming from schools too. Sports!!!
I agree, Tami. We didn’t have this many cases when we were shut down. It just doesn’t make sense to me.
Some people insist on learning the hard way.
I hope that the news of our President and First Lady, several senators and White House staffers testing positive this week for Covid will drive home to some of the “hoax”/conspiracy theorists around here that this virus is very real and anybody can catch it if they’re not careful. It makes no distinction: rich, poor, famous. The virus doesn’t care who you are or how you vote.
I have two friends who are nurses. One works at a large hospital in Indianapolis; the other works in a small hospital in Evansville. Both relate similar stories of what it has felt like over the past few months as healthcare workers in an uphill battle because people won’t take this virus seriously. Both have said that it is heart-breaking to see patients who thought the risks of the virus were exaggerated until they themselves caught it.
Both of my friends have actually seen people die from Covid, and have shared that it’s not a pleasant death. Of the two individuals, one has been an RN for over 30 years and has seen a lot of human suffering during that time. She says that the Covid cases have been the hardest on her emotionally, because in many cases-particularly with some of the younger patients-the death could have been prevented if only the person had used common sense and been more careful.
I don’t know if we need to reinstate some of our other restrictions, but I do hope Governor Holcomb continues to extend the mask mandate for Indiana because, as our president has learned the hard way, our country has not yet “turned the corner” on this health crisis.
First of all the mask mandate is a joke . No one is required to wear one ,so most people don”t . Mr. Werner said we are not back to normal , how so ? Bars , clubs , restaurants and eating places anywhere people get together indoors are open . Bar stools , chairs and tables spaced so patrons are 6 feet apart , hardly . The mask mandate does not apply when eating or drinking . So , yes , we are back to normal .
Gov. Holcomb what are you thinking of opening all the way. You say mask mandatory is still in effect but people are are not AGAIN.!!!! you made Indiana devastating as are numbers go sky rocket. I really hope you get replaced. You put more people at higher risk more than ever now. You hear stories about people who have experienced it. And people who have died there families telling there stories. MOVE BACK THE STAGES. I myself work in healthcare and wow you messed up!!!!!
