Charles V. Engelbrecht, 72, passed away on March 10, 2019, at his home in Dale surrounded by his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Naamah (Wertman) Engelbrecht, and his brothers LeRoy and George Engelbrecht.

Charles is survived by his wife, Susan; daughters, Kimberly Letnaunchyn and Christine Brown; stepchildren, Jennifer and David Smallwood; eight grandchildren; sister, Peggy Schaefer.

Charles was a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War where he valiantly served his country for two tours in the Northern IKOR where he earned two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. He was the proud author of a book written of his time in-country and afterward entitled, “The Guns Fell Silent and The War Began”.

His hobbies included raising rabbits, woodcrafts, coin collecting, antique guns, and running his antique business, Grainry Antiques & Other Needful Things.

Funeral Services are planned for 11 a.m. CST Thursday, March 14, 2019, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 12308  1160 North, Evanston, with a reception to follow in the Church hall.

Visitation is from 9 to 11 a.m. CST at the church on Thursday.

  1. I had the honor of meeting Charles and purchasing one of his books from him. It is in my opinion the most riveting and realistic account available on not only the actual time of service in the Vietnam war but more importantly what he dealt with in the aftermath.
    Rest In Peace Charles. You are a true American hero.
