$1.9 million awarded to help with Dubois County roads

Local communities received nearly $1.9 million in state matching grants to bolster road and bridge improvements.

The money is part of the Community Crossings Matching Grant program that awarded 200 Indiana cities, towns and counties a combined total of $126.5 million through the Indiana Department of Transportation.

“To maintain our roads throughout the year, it takes tremendous resources and funding,” State Representative Shane Lindauer said. “The Community Crossings grant program helps fuel local economies by helping to improve our infrastructure, which can attract more businesses and talent, and boost our quality of life.”

Dubois County received $1 million for local road projects. In addition, Ferdinand was awarded $290,037, Jasper received $264,162 in matching grants and Huntingburg received $342,571.85.

The grant funding can be used toward road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements, guardrail replacements and signage. Smaller municipalities must provide a match of 25% in local funds, while large communities must provide a 50% match.

In total, more than $738 million has been distributed for local road projects through the Community Crossings program.

“Especially in our rural areas, roads are critical for Hoosiers to access goods, services, emergency services and their jobs,” said State Representative Steve Bartels.. “Our communities need these funds to help accomplish projects that would be out of reach if the state had not started this great program.”

  1. Yes, wonderful news. It will be interesting to see how much gets done in Birdseye. Birdseye seems to get the smelly part of the stick, if you know what I mean. Left over black top that crumbles weeks after being applied. They are currently working on culverts. Then, I’ve heard, they are turning State Road 145 from blacktop to chip and seal. Crazy. Just my opinion.
