World-famous Women of the World coming to Jasper Arts
World-famous Women of the World will perform Backstage at the Jasper Arts Center on Sunday, February 26, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.
Women of the World is an award-winning international a cappella quartet that performs original and traditional folk music with a contemporary twist, in 29 languages. The four singers of the Boston-based international ensemble represent Japan, Italy, India, and the USA (by way of Haiti) — Ayumi Ueda, a Berklee College of Music alumna from Japan, Giorgia Renosto from Italy, Annette Philip from India, and Deborah Pierre from USA/Haiti. Despite differences in their upbringing, language, religion, ethnicity, food, and music, they are bound by one unique desire, to explore sounds, rhythms, and musical vocabulary from all over the world.
Since 2008, Women of the World has journeyed through the music of Africa, South America, Asia and Europe, presenting audiences an exhilarating experience through chants, story telling, dance, mouth percussion, and improvisation.
Mentored by Grammy-award winning maestro Bobby McFerrin, Women of the World have also collaborated with powerhouse American songstress Nona Hendryx, African vocal icon Angelique Kidjo, Greek Classical artist Mario Frangoulis, and the Boston Pops Orchestra lead by maestro conductor Keith Lockhart.
Their many accolades including winning the title of 2014 National USA Champions of Harmony Sweepstakes, the longest-running a cappella competition in the country. Women of the World was also nominated for the Boston Music Awards and Independent Music Awards in 2013 and 2014 respectively. They create music that is borderless and spirited. Their music carries the undeniable message of unity and peace.
