Witnesses sought in Jasper SUV vs. truck accident

Jasper — Due to conflicting statements from the two drivers involved in a collission Thursday afternoon, Jasper police are asking witnesses to the accident to come forward.

According to police, Robert T. Luegers, 71, of Jasper, was southbound on U.S. 231 in a 2010 GMC Acadia when he attempted to turn left on Division Road. James C. Evans, 66, of Washington, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 2002 Ford F-350 when Luegers began to turn on Division. He attempted to avoid the collision with Luegers’ Acadia but the two vehicles struck and came to rest in the intersection.

According to police, both drivers gave different circumstances as to how the accident occurred but they agreed that there were witnesses to the accident who had left prior to the arrival of the officer.

Luegers was cited for failing to yield the right-of-way.

His Acadia had about $10,000 in damages and Evans’ Ford had about $2,500, according to police.

The Jasper Police Department is asking that anyone who witnessed the accident call the department at 812-482-2255.
