Winonah Elaine Abell, 80, Huntingburg

Winonah Elaine Abell, 80, of Huntingburg, passed away at 6:15 p.m. on Friday, October 10, 2025, at The Beehive Assisted Living in Huntingburg.

Winonah was born on December 24, 1944, in Wickliffe, Indiana, to Howard and Mildred (Bufford) Cook.

She married Dennis Abell on April 16, 1966, in Birdseye, Indiana.

A graduate of Birdseye High School, Winonah was a devoted member of Salem United Church of Christ and worked for many years in the cafeteria at Southridge High School. She enjoyed playing games—especially dominoes and Scrabble—and had a fondness for singing, ice cream, and sweet tea.

Above all, Winonah treasured time spent with her family and adored her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dennis Abell, who passed away September 5, 2017; one son, Jeffrey Neil Abell; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Earlene (Bill) Osborne, Evadene (Johnny) Sims and Tarscilla Cook.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Chris (Jessica) Abell of Huntingburg; one sister and brother-in-law, Joyce (Bob) Deel of Huntingburg; and two grandchildren, Loren (Jacob) Gross and Cory (fiancé: Moriah) Abell.

Funeral services for Winonah Elaine Abell will be held at 2:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at Rainey Funeral Home in Dale. Pastor Jerry Blackwell will officiate the service. A private burial at Birdseye Cemetery will take place at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, October 15th, before the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to The Beehive Assisted Living in Huntingburg.
