William J. (Sam) Schlachter, 82

William J. (Sam) Schlachter, 82, of Ferdinand, passed away, Sunday, March 1, 2015, at Memorial Hospital and Healthcare Center in Jasper.

Sam was born February 7, 1933, in Ferdinand to William and Philomena (Sternberg) Schlachter. He married Frances Otto on June 18, 1955 in St. Martins Catholic Church in Siberia.

Sam was a retired self-employed farmer. He was a member of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church and St. Meinrad American Legion Post 366. Sam was a Korean Era Army veteran.

Sam is survived by his wife Frances Schlachter of Ferdinand; two daughters, Susanne (Susy) Cooper of Ferdinand and Jane Ubelhor and husband Don of Birdseye; one sister, Lucille Lemmer of Jasper; four grandchildren, Erin Sisley, Brad Cooper, Jared Ubelhor and Alison Cooper; one great-grandchild, Madison Sisley.

Sam was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Arehart Henke.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. CST in St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Siberia with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Military graveside rites will be provided by St. Meinrad American Legion Post 366. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 to 8 p.m. CST at Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand and Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:30 a.m CST at the funeral home.
