Wilfred A. “Willie” Stemle, 83, Celestine

Wilfred A. “Willie” Stemle, 83, of Celestine, passed away at 9:31 a.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at Deaconess Memorial Hospital in Jasper, Indiana.

Willie was born in Huntingburg, Indiana, on July 30, 1943, to Alphonse and Hilda (Schepers) Stemle. 

He married Judith “Judy” Hasenour on July 22, 1967, at St. Celestine Catholic Church in Celestine. She preceded him in death on June 25, 2011.

He graduated from Dubois High School and served in the United States Army National Guard.

He retired from ANR Pipeline, where he had worked for over 30 years.

Willie was a member of St. Celestine Catholic Church – St. Isidore Parish and the Celestine Community Club.

He enjoyed praying the rosary at Brookside during his years there, playing cards, going to the casino, and spending time farming.

He is survived by three children, Lisa (Darrell) Verkamp of Dubois, Ryan (Erin) Stemle of Celestine and Jami (Zach) Eichmiller of Dubois; eight grandchildren, Kelly Verkamp, Korey Verkamp, Kassidy (Nathan) Patrick, Kasey Verkamp, Camryn Stemle, Clayton Stemle, Ashtyn Eichmiller, and Akayla Eichmiller; two step-grandchildren, Avie Gould and Corinne Gould; three great grandchildren, Raya Benson, Rynlee Benson, and Brantley Patrick, two siblings, Louise (Maher) Wissa of Clearwater, Fla. and Jim (Barbara) Stemle of Lakeland, Fla.; one brother-in-law, Kenny Greenwell of Winter Haven, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death, besides his wife and parents, are one sister, Ruth Greenwell and two brothers, Eugene and Ernie Stemle.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Wilfred A. “Willie” Stemle will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at St. Celestine Catholic Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Mass time at the church on Saturday.
