Over 90 students, faculty, and staff of Vincennes University Jasper Campus participated in the annual day of service in Dubois County Wednesday.

In all, 97 VUJC students, faculty, and staff participated by performing service at 10 different sites in Dubois County. The Day of Service program started out with keynote speaker, Brad Ward, giving a heartfelt personal account to students about giving back to the community and why it is important to get involved.

All of this is intended to teach students about the importance of philanthropy and civic duty. The Student Activities Office at Vincennes University Jasper Campus put on VUJC’s second annual Day of Service yesterday, November 19. The event was created to expose students to service learning and philanthropic opportunities in our area.

Students went to Tri-Cap, Salvation Army, Freedom Reins, Jasper Chamber of Commerce, Tri-County YMCA, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Arnold F. Habig Community Center, Jasper City Hall, Jasper Train Depot, and the Jasper City Mill.

When students arrived at the sites they were given background information about the organization, who they serve, why they need volunteers, and more. Then the VUJC students, faculty, and staff members helped these sites with various activities for the several hours.

After performing service, students came back to the VUJC Ruxer Gym to have a discussion and reflect on the experience with their groups.

Students who participated commented on how good it felt to help others and how it changed their outlook on volunteering and the need for volunteers. After the discussion, the students enjoyed a warm catered meal and shared the extra food with the Community Meals program.

Service is embedded into the University’s mission and strategic plan. Its seal reads “s’Instruire Pour Servir,” <learn in order to serve>.
