Virginia (Ginny) M. Mendel, 73, of Jasper, passed away at 2:11 p.m. Saturday, July 18, 2015, in Memorial Hospital & Health Care Center in Jasper.
Virginia was born in Jasper, Indiana on July 30, 1941 to Leo Sr. and Catherine (Heichelbech) Giesler. She married Thomas L. Mendel May 3, 1962 in St. Ferdinand Catholic Church.
For many years she manage the former Heritage Inn and later the Split Rail Restaurants in Jasper. She also was known for baking weddings cakes.
She was a member of Precious Blood Catholic Church, The Ladies Sodality and the St. Ann’s Society.
She enjoyed cooking, her flower Garden , grandchildren and Cardinal Baseball and IU Basketball.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas L. Mendel; one daughter, Pam Hildenbrand and husband Greg of Jasper; sons, Tim Mendel and wife Tonya of Jasper and Keith Mendel and wife Shelley of Jasper; six grandchildren, Lauren and Austin Hildenbrand, Cameron and Noah Mendel and Seth and Kaitlynn Mendel; brothers, Robert Burger Sr. and wife Virlee of Ferdinand, Leo Giesler Jr. of Ferdinand, Ronald Giesler and wife Shirley of Ferdinand, and Bill Giesler and wife Mary Jo Ferdinand; sisters, Shirley Lindauer of Ferdinand, Martha (Mick) Oxley and husband Donald of Huntingburg and Mary Denning of St. Meinrad; also, many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Virginia M. Mendel will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2015, in Precious Blood Catholic Church in Jasper, with entombment to follow in Fairview Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21, 2015, at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper, Indiana. Rosary will be held by the Ladies Sodality and members of Precious Blood and the St. Ann’s Society at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
